HISTORY OF EAST CALDER BOWLING CLUB

East Calder BC was gifted to the village by Col Hare in 1905. It was previously a field of Broompark Farm.
Broompark Cottages were situated where the Bookies office now stands and were demolished in the 1920s.
Col Hare of Calder Hall was born on 16th August 1836 and died on 21st November 1928 at his other estate, Blairlogie in Lanarkshire.
Both Col Hare and his wife Lady Hare attended the opening ceremony.
When Col Hare died the Hare family were no longer resident in Calder Hall and in the 1930s the estate was sold and purchased by Willian Crawford Snr who farmed at Hattan Mains near Dalmahoy.
The estate papers were passed to W Crawford Snr and included the bowling green. These papers were presented to a Mr W Stark, known locally as “Boxer” Stark.
Mr Crawford purchased the estate in order to procure the farms of Langton, Broompark and Hoghill. Col Hare was a benefactor to the village.
Another benefactor was George Young who, in 1882 had the Village Hall built in the Main Street and gifted it to the people of the village, this was their first meeting place.
When George Young died in 1909 he left £500 in order to mainain it. He also gifted to the village the clock which was built into the spire of the church and he also gifted the church bell.
The bell and clock were gifted in 1900. In his will he left £500 to East Calder Church. He also left £500 to Bridgend Church, Mid Calder. When Bridgend Church was demolished in the 1950s the money was transferred to the Kirk of Calder. Margaret Young’s family have lived in the village for over 300 years.
She was also instrumental in having the graveyard restored as it was a ruin. The graveyard was built in 1146 and Margaret wrote to the Council to advise them of the history of the ancient Church of Saint Cuthbert.
